Dr. Michael Perchinsky,

M.D., B.M.Sc., FRCSC

After medical school in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, he did an intern year at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. This was followed by a General Surgical Residency at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon. His Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery was done at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. He has been at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria since 1998 in his current position of consultant Cardiac Surgeon.

When away from his practice, he is happy to enjoy any wonderful golf course or swimming pool near by as well as riding his motorcycle around scenic Vancouver Island.

Dr. Lynn Fedoruk,

M.D., M.Sc., FRCSC

After completing medical school in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, she practised as a family doctor and worked in the cardiac surgery program at the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminister as a clinical associate for 8 years. Her Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery was done at the University of British Columbia, completed in 2005. She then went on to do an advanced Fellowship in Heart Failure Surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. Since returning to Canada in 2007, she has been practising cardiac surgery at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, in the current position of consultant Cardiac Surgeon and has been the Chief of the division of Cardiac Surgery since 2010.

When away from her practice, she is enjoys curling, scuba diving, golfing as well as walking her dogs.

Dr. Rohit Singal,

M.D., M.Sc., FRCSC

Dr. Singal completed his Cardiac Surgery training at the University of Manitoba during which time he obtained his M.Sc. in Surgery conducting experiments on ‘biologically variable’ cardiopulmonary bypass in a porcine model of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. He followed this with his Critical Care certification at the University of Western Ontario. After starting practice at the St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg in 2008 he functioned as the Head of the Surgical Heart Failure program in Manitoba which is responsible for ECMO and VAD support for patients with cardiorespiratory failure.. He join the team here at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in 2018. While here he is leading the use of ECMO on Vancouver Island as an intensive means of supporting patients with acute failure of their heart or lungs.

Dr. Singal and his family very much enjoy what Victoria has to offer with its welcoming community and many beaches, trails, golf courses and other recreational opportunities.

Dr. Kanwal (Kenny) Kumar,

M.D., M.Sc., FRCSC

Dr. Kumar completed his Medical Degree and Cardiac Surgery residency from the University of Manitoba. He went on to complete his Aortic/Endovascular/TAVI fellowship from the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital. Following his fellowship, He joined the Section of Cardiac Surgery, University of Manitoba in July 2017. He was been appointed the Surgical Director for Transcatheter Heart Valve Therapies, Co-Director of the Manitoba Thoracic Aortic Clinic, and prior to his departure to Victoria, Program Director for the Cardiac Surgery Residency Program.  He has been at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria since 2019 in his current position of consultant Cardiac Surgeon.

With everything that Vancouver Island has to offer, Dr. Kumar and his young family are thrilled to join this vibrant community. He is eager to continue his surgical interests in practice here, while watching his family flourish is this beautiful environment.

Dr. Michael Yamashita

M.D.C.M., M.P.H., C.P.H., FRCSC

Dr. Yamashita completed his undergraduate and medical training at McGill University. He then pursued his residency training in cardiac surgery at the University of British Columbia becoming certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in June 2013. During his residency training, he also earned a Master of Public Health at Harvard University focusing on Epidemiology and Biostatistics.  Dr. Yamashita then completed fellowships at UBC in transapical aortic valve replacement and VAD/transplant surgery, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in advanced valve repair and heart failure surgery, and at the Cleveland Clinic in aortic and endovascular surgery.  Dr. Yamashita started his career at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he served as the Director of Complex Thoracic Aortic Surgery, the Director of Manitoba Thoracic Aortic Diseases Clinic and the Surgical Co-Director of Heart Failure – ECMO Program.  He joined the Cardiac Surgery team at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in December 2022.

Outside of work, Dr. Yamashita enjoys golfing, travelling and spending time with his wife and two children.
